Hey there, NYS-MEP High Schoolers!

Have you ever been asked, "what do you want to do when you grow up?" Let’s explore some options together! Check out the workshop titles below and join us for any or all topics that interest you! In our time together you will have an opportunity to:

  • Explore career and job possibilities after you've graduated from High School.
  • Ask questions and engage in meaningful dialogue and activities with other NYS-MEP high school students and staff.
  • Develop leadership, reflection, and critical thinking skills.

ONE MORE THING~ Each workshop will start with an activity, and you’ll have the chance to win a prize!

You won't want to miss this one! Come meet and learn from this truly authentic and inspiring individual, Guillermo Chin Canche, an Astrobiologist that is working with NASA on the Dragonfly mission. Guillermo is from a small remote town in Mexico, and he will speak about his journey of being the first in his family to attend higher education and about his experience working with NASA! Learn more about Guillermo here!

Saturday, February 10, 2024 | 10-11:30AM - Turning Passion into Profit

Join us and meet two wonderful artists! Barbara Astrini, an Emmy-winning Art Director and Motion Designer will speak to us about her experience as a young immigrant from Brazil and how she aims to use to her art to bring joy, justice, and color to her audience. Barbara will show us the software she uses to create some of her art. And this is pretty cool- she works for Nickelodeon! Our next presenter, Lexi Parra, is a Photographer and Community Educator. She focuses her work on youth culture, migration, the personal affects of inequality and violence, and themes of resilience. We look forward to Lexi's perspective and hearing about her unique experiences of living between Venezuela and United States.

Join us to meet Jasmine Garsd, an Argentine-American Journalist and Culture Podcaster. Jasmine is the host of The Last Cup, a podcast about Lionel Messi, soccer, and immigrant experience. Come learn about the process of creating content, writing stories, and Jasmine's own immigration experience.

Learn what it means to dedicate one's life to public service for the betterment of one's community. Hanka Grabovica, Director of the Mohawk Regional METS, has worked in education for several years. She goes above and beyond to help her students. Hanka will share her personal story about moving to America from Bosnia as a teenager, during the Bosnian war. Hanka will also speak to the group about a career in teaching and the power of not giving up!
