Out-of-School-Youth Spring Workshops Series

The NYS-MEP is excited to host the virtual Out-of-School-Youth (OSY) Spring workshops series! Four events are scheduled for 2023. Migrant Educators: Please invite your OSY students to participate in one, two, three, or all of the workshops! Find out more below.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

  • This series is for NYS-MEP students and staff only.
  • Migrant Educators: Use the registration form below to sign up your students!
  • Expect Zoom meeting information sent to students and Migrant Educators via email and WhatsApp prior to each event.
  • The delivery of workshop supplies will be coordinated with each student ahead of time.
  • Registration is appreciated at least two weeks prior to the event, which helps us deliver supplies in a timely manner.

MUSIC NIGHT

  • Tuesday, March 21, 2023 (7-9 pm)
  • Language: Presented in Spanish and English consecutively
  • Presenter: David Gonzalez

David Gonzalez is an award-winning performance artist with extensive experience conducting outreach with underserved communities. He earned his doctorate from New York University and received numerous grants and commissions throughout his career. During this presentation, David will be singing, playing his guitar, sharing stories, demonstrating an interactive lyric-writing activity, and there will be some surprises at the end, too! Join us via Zoom for a night of music, laughter, and fun! (This workshop will not be recorded.)

GREEN LIGHT LAW (FOR OSY AND PARENTS)

  • Tuesday, April 4, 2023 (7-9 pm)
  • Language: Presented in Spanish (Consecutive English interpretation available as well.)
  • Presenter: Erika Aguilera

Erika Aguilera is a Worker Rights Advocate for the Worker Justice Center of New York ( WJCNY). Some of her roles include outreach, facilitating health and safety trainings, and referring clients to other agencies. During this workshop, Erika explains the process for obtaining a driver’s license while highlighting many key points of the NYS Green Light Law. Erika concludes with a Q&A session. This workshop will not be recorded.

KEEPING YOUR HOME SAFE

  • Tuesday, April 11, 2023 (7-9 pm)
  • Language: Presented in Spanish and English consecutively
  • Presenters: Greg Coffta and Liam Hanehan

Join us to hear about some common home safety tips as Greg Coffta demonstrates how to install a smoke alarm and how to properly seal a window, with winterizing tips. Students also hear from a farm owner, and Liam Hanehan will speak about the importance of communicating with your boss when a repair is needed. Additional topics include exhaust and plumbing tips. This workshop will not be recorded.

COOKING CLASS

  • Tuesday, April 18, 2023 (7-9 pm)
  • Language: Presented in Spanish (Consecutive English interpretation available as well.)
  • Presenters: Jenna Vaccarelli and Orlando O'Neill

We wrap up the spring OSY workshop series with a fun, live cooking lesson on Zoom. Chef Orlando and Maestra Jenna demonstrate preparing a healthy meal as students follow along and make this meal from their homes. Chef Orlando kicks us off by showing how to properly cut up a whole chicken. Throughout this workshop, presenters highlight many topics including: food safety and nutrition and kitchen etiquette (proper cutting and washing techniques). This workshop will not be recorded.


The content of these presentations are geared towards serving the migrant populations in New York State as defined under Title I, Part C and the approved State Service Delivery Plan, and may NOT be appropriate to all situations.
