Description

The Simply Speaking book was created by NYS-MEP ID&R, and Recruiters give it to newly censused OSY students in their welcome bags. The book contains 18 basic ENL lessons tailored for everyday life in New York and an answer key. Join us on May 10 as we dig into some brand new worksheets, which were created to compliment and use alongside Simply Speaking with your OSY students. The worksheets cover each of the seven most commonly used topics. Finally, find out what else is included in the OSY weIcome bags!

The content in this presentation is geared towards serving the migrant populations in New York State as defined under Title I, Part C and the approved State Service Delivery Plan, and may NOT be appropriate to all situations.

Travis:  In his 13th year with the Migrant Education Program, Travis has held many positions. While working alongside with OSY Specialists and fellow recruiters around the nation, he has had the opportunity to share his ideas and strategies in hopes to better serve our students.

Travis has been with the ID&R program, after a three-year stay with the South Carolina Department of Education. He played a role in all of the duties associated with the South Carolina MEP. Travis currently is a member of the iOSY and IRRC consortia and has presented at several national and state conferences to demonstrate how mapping and technological strategies can improve with serving and finding students.

She graduated from SUNY Oswego with a bachelor’s degree in English as a Second Language instruction, and holds a master’s degree in literacy education as well. Jenna has presented at numerous professional development workshops for NYS-MEP Migrant Educators over the years where she shares instructional strategies for diverse learners, both in-person and on virtual platforms. One of Jenna's primary focus areas is sharing activities and teaching strategies that keep OSY students engaged and motivated while learning English.

Special Instructions

  • There are several ways that you can access the worksheets online depending on how you are working with your students:
    • On the NYS-MEP website, follow this path to find OSY resources in the Staff Library: Home > Resources > Staff Library > Filter for OSY > Choose Simply Speaking.
    • Give this TIP a try for another way to send the fillable PDF link to your students:  From the NYS-MEP website, right click on the worksheet title that you would like to use. Then choose Copy Link Address. Then paste it into an email to yourself which you can then access on your phone and paste again into a WhatsApp or text message to your student. The link that you copied is a direct link to the PDF without sending students to a website first.
  • You can also use/send the Google Site link to students that Travis created. From here, open each worksheet as you wish.

Below is an outline which can help you plan how to use the worksheets with the Simply Speaking book.
