Early Childhood: Supporting Parents to Talk, Read, and Sing

Talk, Read, Sing

This section identifies an early childhood story and a related set of picture-word cards to give parents tools for expanding their child’s language and reading comprehension. Themes are chosen to relate to the child’s experiences; such as weather, animals, farm, and going to school.

Parent Tips focusing on language, reading, talking, and singing, are located on the U.S. Department of Education’s Early Learning Office website. These lessons utilize two of their documents for parents.

  • “Tips for Families,” has tips for parents of infants and for parents of toddlers.
  • “Tips for Using Language at Home and in the Community” encourages parents to use their family’s language with their children.

About the Stories: Each lesson uses a four-page story from the  BeginningReads series for K-1 readers, one of many projects on the  TextProject website. The BeginningReads stories are all in English, so each lesson below has a “Translation Bookmark” with the story translated in Burmese, Karen, and Spanish.

About the Picture-Word Cards: Each lesson uses coordinated  picture-word cards found on the PreKinders website. The PreKinders resources are all in English, so the words cards for each lesson below are translated on the “Transition Bookmark” in Burmese, Karen, and Spanish.
