The NYS-MEP is excited to host the 2026 virtual Out-of-School-Youth (OSY) workshop series with life skills content mixed with online English classes!

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

  • Migrant Educators: Please invite your OSY students to participate in any or all the workshops!
  • Migrant Educators: Use the form at the end of this page to register students! You only need to register them one time no matter how many workshops they plan to attend.
  • Zoom meeting information will be sent to students/participants and Migrant Educators via email and WhatsApp prior to each event.
  • Workshops will not be recorded.

Getting Your Driver’s License

Presenter: Worker Justice Center of New York (WJCNY) 
Audience: OSY Students, NYS-MEP Staff, and Parents/Guardians!

During this workshop, a WJCNY presenter will walk participants through the steps for obtaining a driver’s license and review important details about the New York State Green Light Law. The session will conclude with a Q&A opportunity.

During this workshop, participants will hear from a community advocate about what their rights are when dealing with law enforcement or ICE. There will be a Q&A session, so that participants have the opportunity to ask any questions they may have. During the English portion of the workshop, participants will learn important phrases that they can use to express their rights, and to ask questions to find out important information in emergency situations. Participants will also learn how to call for help during an emergency.


Understanding US Laws

During this workshop, participants will learn about laws in the United States, with a focus on New York State. Many laws differ from those in other countries, and even from other U.S. states, so understanding and following them is essential for staying safe and informed. In the English class portion of the workshop, participants will review past, present, and future verb tenses and practice common verbs such as to do, to go, and others.


English Greetings and Introductions

During this workshop, participants will learn basic English greetings and how to introduce themselves with confidence. They will also explore practical tips and strategies for practicing and improving their English every day- even without enrolling in formal classes.


Visiting the Doctor

During this workshop, participants will hear from a health care advocate about the importance of regularly visiting the doctor. The advocate will also discuss the types of financial assistance available for medical services and alternative options for accessing healthcare for individuals who do not have their own transportation. A short Q&A session will follow, giving participants the opportunity to ask questions. During the English class portion of the workshop, participants will learn how to schedule a medical appointment, including useful vocabulary and common phrases.


Ordering Food at a Restaurant

IIn this presentation, students will take part in a practical life skills lesson focused on ordering food in person, over the phone, and through websites or apps. During the English class portion, we will explore food-related vocabulary and practice essential phrases for ordering, such as “I would like” and “I want.”


Opening a Bank Account

In this presentation, students will learn how to open a bank account in the United States. They will also build the essential vocabulary and practical phrases needed to confidently communicate at a bank.



The content of these presentations is designed to support migrant populations in New York State, as defined under Title I, Part C and the approved State Service Delivery Plan, and may not be applicable to all situations.
