To administer the Early Childhood Academic Tool, or ECA for short, please use the following resources:
ECA Guidance Document – Read the Guidance Document for information about who should receive the ECA pretest or posttest and how to use the ECA Student Workbook to administer the ECA questions. In addition, the ECA Guidance Document explains how to score a student’s responses and how to record the ECA results.
- Optional Scavenger Hunt: Scan the ECA Guidance Document for the blue highlights to find out what has been updated this year.
ECA Student Workbook – Use the workbook to read the assessment questions with the student for the pretest and for the posttest and submit to the METS office. Students can use the color cards and shape cards printed in each workbook for the “matching” questions. Available in English and Spanish, each METS program will print copies in color for educators to use. The 2026-27 ECA Student Workbook ends with information to share with parents about reading with their child.
Student Response Sheet – Record the student’s responses and raw score for the pretest or posttest. A copy in English and Spanish is available on pages 9-10 in the ECA Guidance Document.
- The optional, fillable-PDF versions of the Student Response Sheet, are available below. The fillable option allows educators to type the student responses and scores on the computer and save per student. Starting with ECA 2026-27, the fillable forms can calculate the total raw score as the scores for the individual skills are entered.
