"Summer Picnics"

Summer Picnics EC lesson image

The lesson warms up with the student’s name puzzle, and making a game with the prepositions ON and UNDER.  The story, “Summer Picnics”/”Picnics de verano,” from the Reading A-Z website has great pictures with nouns and clear actions to utilize the emergent reading comprehension questions. In the activity connected to the story, students recreate a picnic setting with paper food to cut and glue to a paper plate.

Students use the Circle Viewfinder to find objects shaped like circles in the story, the food, and if possible, letters in the student’s name. Students use a Circle Poster to draw the objects and letters found.

Parents receive the Parent Tip to talk, read, and sing with their children every day, with a specific example about singing. Parents are encouraged to support their children in their home languages as the ON/UNDER sentences and Circle Poster are available in English, Burmese, Karen, and Spanish.

Resources from Other Websites:

  • “Summer Picnics” is a Level “aa” book from the Reading A-Z website, is available in both English and Spanish
    • The website has a 14-day free trial period, with limited access to the book titles.
    • Otherwise, one needs to purchase a license to use for one year.
    • Note: If this story is unavailable, substitute with another story about a picnic or about eating

Resource Files Below: Click on the numbered, orange file names below the heading, “Book Resource Files,” to download. Individual file names highlight the user and printing needs:

  • “Educator” means the printout will be reused, so only need to print one copy per educator
  •  “Student” means the file is consumable, so need to print one copy per student
  • “Parent” means files to leave with each family to use

Since this lesson has multiple files in languages other than English, the individual files are followed by “Language” Sets. These reorganize all of the student and parent files (translated and non-translated) into four home language sets: English, Burmese, Karen, and Spanish.
